Metal Gear Solid: Oedipus Syndrome

Prologue

By: 0Grey Fox0

Day of the Arsenal Gear Incident, New York City

Vamp sat on the top of a tall building, regaining his energy. He wouldn’t lie to himself. His wounds did hurt. His forehead was still bleeding. Getting shot in the head would hurt anyone. He reflected upon the past day and felt angry, uncontrollably angry. His wounds were all that kept him sitting. He had been humiliated… too many times. He coughed up blood and managed to mutter, “damn kid.” Aside from the intruder, their mission had failed, and Fortune was gone. He was sure of it. A space in his heart was empty.
Not too far away was the location of Arsenal’s crash. Smoke had been harassing his keen sense of smell for too long now. Without warning, another scent filled the air, a scent he knew all too well. Blood. Two distinct traces of it. One he recognized immediately. He had drawn that blood himself not too long ago. It was the kid’s. However, the other took him a minute. He had smelled it before. The harrier! “Solidus!” Vamp tried to sit up, but only managed to cough up more blood, and he then fell back, unconscious.
It was a few hours later that he was awakened by a familiar voice, something, it seemed, he knew from long, long, ago. It was beckoning him. “Vamp… Vamp… The time is near… Come to me… Come.” With the last word, the bullet wound in his head began to bleed anew. He had no choice. In fact, the idea of “choice” didn’t even occur to him. He stood, though he lacked the ability to stand. He walked off the edge of the building and started his journey. He was heading east.

The same day, 7:00 p.m., Shadow Moses Island

Sam hated Shadow Moses Island. It was creepy, cold, and there was no reason to be doing his job this late in the day. This place hadnÂ’t been touched since the terrorist act all those years ago. There was no need for the cover of dark. Yes, he hated it, but he needed the pay. He wandered around by himself, with his CD player blaring Nine Inch Nails in his ears and nothing else but an empty sack. It wouldnÂ’t be empty when he left.
Time had passed and he had been pretty lucky. Very lucky. He had found a crude grave right outside the entrance. He didnÂ’t want to mention what he was carrying from that location. However, the other things he carried were a gas mask, a handkerchief, and what seemed to be a femur. The bone was the strangest thing. It seemed like it had been pecked cleanÂ… Well, Athena said a bone would be enough.
Sam had one target left, and his feet led him to what seemed to be a hangar. For what, he couldnÂ’t tell, but the remains of it lay in a pile at the back of the room. He went closer to examine the rubble, and beneath a large piece of metal he found his target. It was a grossly disfigured body seemingly made entirely of metal with a single glowing eye. He didnÂ’t want to take part of this thing. It was the scariest thing heÂ’d seen all day. He didnÂ’t even want to touch it. But he had to. It was his job. Sam was a garbage collector.

8:30 p.m., Off the coast of New York City, “Big Shell”

Ernest was also a garbage collector, but he wasnÂ’t having such a great time. He, unlike Sam, did have to resort to stealth. He knew from his briefing that there shouldnÂ’t be anyone there, but some nearby Coast Guard low-ranking officers, wanting to be heroes, had decided to investigate without orders, and Ernest wanted to take no chances.
He had spent most of the day looking for his targets. After hours of searching, he had finally given up on the “African-American female” and due to some inebriated soldiers, he had had to take the long way around the shell to reach his final destination.
Ernest was on top of the tallest strut on the structure, and he was infuriated. He was calling in to tell his superiors that his target was incinerated beyond recognition, even that of Athena’s machines. Apparently, the bastard had blown apart from within. Who puts a bomb inside themselves? “Insane, I swear”

9:00, Somewhere in the Balkan Mountains

“The gears have been set in motion, Zeus.”
“Thank you, Hades. Tell me though. When will I see you?”
“Soon enough, soon enough. But that is not for us to think about now. We must prepare. They are coming to you. All of them, save a few. From all over the world. From this point on, they are in your control, Solidus.”

Metal Gear Solid: Oedipus Syndrome

Chapter 1: Rebirths

By: 0Grey Fox0

Arsenal Gear never existed. At least, it never existed as what it really was. The terrorists who had taken the offshore oil clean-up facility, Big Shell, and killed President Johnson had been wiped out by an anonymous hero. However, a large part of the Big Shell had been destroyed and the mysterious battleship of the terrorists, due to explosions and a malfunction, had run aground in New York City. The former vice president announced that all was now safe and the country was better off having the enemyÂ’s advanced technology in their hands. The dead were mourned, the event was forgotten, and the world moved on.
Solid Snake was still dead to most of the world. Only his close friends, the survivors of Big Shell, and the Patriots knew he was still alive. After the incident, Snake had sworn to save the child of Olga Gurlukovich from the Patriots and wipe out the elusive men themselves. The only lead Snake and Otacon had had was the tracer Snake had stuck to the Metal Gear RAY that Ocelot had taken on his way to the PatriotsÂ’ base of operations. However, they had found the RAY beaten and abandoned in eastern Newfoundland, and Ocelot, along with any trace of him, had disappeared.
The only choice Snake and Otacon had was to continue their efforts in Philanthropy, picking up any clues to the PatriotsÂ’ location and stopping other Metal Gear projects in the process. Meryl had taken her own path after Shadow Moses for reasons unknown to the others, but had returned after Big Shell to work on and off with Snake on several missions. Meryl and Snake were still very much in love and often took breaks to get away from the missions together when the trouble seemed to be getting them nowhere. Mei Ling had been developing new weapons and technology illegally for some time and had decided to add her efforts to the force in mid-2010. She seemed to have a crush on Otacon, but he was always too busy to notice.
Their team complete, it was much easier than ever before to take missions on quickly and efficiently. Philanthropy had stopped the Metal Gear CLONE project of Kazakhstan in 2011 and the Metal Gear GALE disaster of Laos a year later, among many others. They were considered terrorists to many but were vaguely acknowledged by the UN. Their endeavors continued successfully (though without clues to the PatriotsÂ’ where-a-bouts) until November, 2014, when the long rusty gears finally began to turn againÂ…

November, 23, 2014; 3:40 p.m.; Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Otacon had caught what he called a “Warning String”, or clues to a new Metal Gear Project, sooner than usual. Philanthropy had caught the group called the Red Plague with a half-finished Metal Gear. Snake and Meryl had infiltrated the ‘abandoned’ military facility and were in hot pursuit of Red Plague’s leader. The chase had brought them outside the Metal Gear’s storage warehouse, where they were catching their breath before charging into the final confrontation.
Meryl was against the wall next to the open doorway with her hands on her knees, breathing heavily. The sun was beating down. They had never completed a mission at this time in the day. It was unusually hot and quite unsettling. Her Desert Eagle was shaking in her hand as she looked back at the distance they had run. It was a mile of dark trees that had overgrown the military equipment that had once been there. Birds and other creatures called from around them.
“I’m not sure I’m ready for this one, Snake. I’ve never been so exhausted before a fight.”
Snake only laughed. He was standing upright, with his hand behind his head, letting his lungs breathe. His SOCOM was pointing up into the air in his hand. He, too, was breathing hard, but it didnÂ’t seem to be getting to him as much.
“You complain about a little running after surviving being shot 5 times with a sniper rifle? I think maybe I should have left you to die at Shadow Moses.”
Meryl stood up and frowned at him though failing to hide her amusement. She straightened up and reloaded her pistol.
“That’s not funny, Snake. Anyway, I’m ready to go. Let’s get in there and show them what we’re made of, alright?”
He only nodded and got his pistol ready to fire. Together, they turned the corner, their guns pointed straight ahead, ready to fire at anything that seemed to be a threat.
The remaining forces of the Red Plague stood about twenty feet away from Snake and Meryl, sporting their red and black striped uniforms. A handful of soldiers were left, and at the center stood the leader and another figure. Snake noted the other body to be a woman. To be more exact, she was Hispanic with brown hair and too many earrings to count decorated both ears. She was standing strangely close to the commander, whose name Snake realized he still did not know.
Behind them stood the recognizable body of a Metal Gear though only the legs and torso had been completed. The word LUCK had been painted on the side. It didnÂ’t seem dangerous at this point, so Snake ignored it.
Suddenly, the man stepped forward. He was almost 6 foot, had fair skin, and looked to be at about his mid-20s. His hair was black and combed forward, and his eyes were a bright shimmering blue.
“Solid Snake.” He interrupts with a laugh. “I had heard you were dead these past few years. So it was you who has been ending all these Metal Gear offspring projects recently. Oh! Forgive me for not introducing myself earlier. I am Rogue Chameleon, a former and brief member of your beloved FOXHOUND. I am the bringer of a new age, a true god of…”
Snake fired his SOCOM and Rogue Chameleon dropped heavily to the cold floor. The remaining troops ran from the building before they suffered the same fate as their leader. Only the girl hesitated. With one brief look of hatred into SnakeÂ’s eyes, she ran off, as well. Chameleon now lay dead on the floor, a perfect shot having been fired into his skull through the forehead. It was a sad sight to see really. Snake frowned and spat on ChameleonÂ’s body.
“I don’t have time for monologues.”
Snake and Meryl were now free to complete their mission. They set explosives about the Metal Gear and headed for the rear exit. Snake pushed the trigger button, and turned around to watch the fireworks. To his disbelief, through the smoke and fire, he saw Chameleon standing at the entrance, watching him. His forehead was bleeding profusely, the dark liquid covering his face and dripping from his chin. He was smiling. His eyes were a pale, dead gray.

Chapter 2: Ghosts

By: 0Grey Fox0

November 23, 2014; 4:28 p.m.; Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Snake and Meryl were sitting outside in the shade below some large trees when Otacon and Mei Ling came to pick them up in the chopper. A little earlier, Snake had attempted to go after Chameleon, but eventually gave up on getting through the smoke, fire, and explosions. The pair climbed into the side door, and Otacon, after a simple “Congratulations,” took the helicopter off the ground and concentrated on flying them home. Snake sat down with his back to the wall and lit a cigarette.
“Good afternoon, love birds!” Mei Ling was sitting in the back with them with her laptop open in front of her, and she was giggling at what she thought was a great joke. Snake snuck a peak at the screen of the computer, and it seemed to him that Mei Ling was doing Otacon’s usual job. Three red dots were blinking on a world map. The young woman followed Snake’s gaze. “Ready for more action, already Snake? That’s just like you. Yes, three complete Metal Gears have come up since you started your last mission. We’re preparing for this one here.” A slender finger prodded the screen in the Eastern European region.
Snake looked down at his feet, disinterested. He took a drag of his cigarette and let it hang at his side. Meryl stood across from him, watching him, shaking her head disapprovingly. After staying silent for a moment, he looked back up at Mei Ling.
“It sounds like you have reason for going there first.”
Mei Ling grew serious and looked troubled. She clicked on the dot and a page-long list of information appeared.
“Yes, Snake. We think something really bad is going down over there. Besides the usual demands, some weird things showed up…. The location of the Patriots and the DNA of Big Boss.”

November 24; 5:20 a.m.; Over the Adriatic Sea

“Western Macedonia. The Balkans, Snake. I’m sure you know they’ve been a hotspot for the past few years. Serbia, Albania, Montenegro, Macedonia – they’re all about ready to slit each others’ throats. We don’t know who’s in there now, but it’s causing an uproar. They call themselves Neo Olympus, alluding to the Greek gods who everyone worshipped in that area long ago. They’re arrogant, and they have reason to be.”
It was early morning, and Otacon was filling Snake and Meryl in on their imminent mission. Meryl was nodding off, and Snake was smoking a pre-mission cigarette, a sort of good luck ritual for him. Mei Ling was flying the chopper, negotiating air space right-a-ways as they went. Otacon continued.
“For one, they have the Metal Gear. Also, it’s rumored that they’re all world-renowned mercenaries. We can’t be sure, though. They’ve all changed their codenames since joining Neo Olympus. However, our biggest problem is political. They hijacked the Macedonian president Sasko Buckovski’s plane. Macedonia is blaming its neighbors and they’re pointing fingers at each other. If this explodes, Snake, major countries are certain to get involved and this could go global. ARM has already been deployed to the enemy facility, but you know we can never depend on the military. Snake, Meryl, if you can, you have to get Buckovski out of there. Otherwise, the objectives are the usual: destroy the Metal Gear, and, if possible, eliminate the enemy.”
Snake nodded in silence. Meryl had fallen asleep, and Otacon looked agitated. Snake held up his hand as Otacon moved to wake her.
“Don’t worry, Otacon. I’ll fill her in later.”
Mei Ling leaned back during a momentary pause in her negotiations.
“Snake, my hack-name, Confucius, has been being traced lately. It was too dangerous to risk this time. I couldn’t get too much for you in terms of supplies. You’re pretty much on your own this time around. Remember, ‘One cannot refuse to eat just because there is a chance of being choked,’ Snake. You have to do what needs to be done, even if there’s a chance of failure. Fight for what you believe in.”
She hadnÂ’t stopped. She never would. She giggled, smiled, and returned to the radio.

5:58 a.m.; Balkan Mountains

It reminded Snake of Alaska. The snow crunched beneath their feet. Their breath curled and danced on the air. The evergreens loomed overhead. A large mountain towered over them ahead. They were alone in the wilderness. The sound of the chopper faded as Otacon and Mei Ling headed home. It was just Snake and Meryl, and it was still dark.
The two of them started toward their destination, walking slowly, making as little noise as possible. Meryl had learned how to stay silent over the years. ThatÂ’s why Snake knew someone else was there when branches snapped.
Shadows played tricks on Snake’s eyes as he searched for the source of the sound. There was a weird feeling of déjà vu in this place that Snake couldn’t explain. Eyes. A flash of blond hair. Silhouettes. They were surrounded. The sound of a grunt caused Snake to pause. Meryl, who had seemed oblivious to these suspicions, ran into him from behind.
“What’s going on Snake?” she whispered.
Snake didn’t move. “We’re surrounded. Eyes are on us. Everywhere.”
Meryl glanced around, confused. “That’s odd. I haven’t noticed a thing.” She continued to look about her. “I’ll go check it out. How ‘bout that?”
Snake couldnÂ’t bring himself to speak another word. He was confused. How had he been surrounded without his noticing it? Meryl shrugged and jogged off into the trees. Snake remained frozen, ready to fight if need be. He listened closely to the footsteps moving around him. He swore he even heard laughter at one point, high-pitched, insane. It seemed like hours before Meryl returned to him.
“Nothing, Snake. Nothing at all. I did see the base though. Two entrances. I think we should split up. You keep going that way. It’s not too far. See you soon.
She reached up and kissed him, then left before he had a chance to say anything. Snake felt alone, very alone and maybe even a little afraid. He felt he had gone crazy. The footsteps had disappeared. After a moment, he decided it was best to go on with the mission, and he jogged ahead until he came to the top of a steep slope. He stopped at the edge and looked down, debating the possibilities.
“Watch your step,” said a cold, dead, familiar voice from behind him, and two hands pushed Snake off the world and into Olympus.

Earlier that Day; 2:17 a.m.; The Balkans

The door swung open and Zeus looked up from the computer screen, his smile turning into a scowl.
“How dare you…” He then noticed who was standing in the doorway. “Oh, Hades. Welcome. Welcome. What brings you here?”
Rogue Chameleon stepped into the room, though not very far. His face was mostly clean, with a few spots of dried blood that he had missed. It appeared that there was something or someone behind him.
“You said we still needed a Demeter,” he said. “I think I’ve found just the girl.”
With that, he gave a little tug of his hand and out from behind him stepped a young Hispanic woman with brown hair and many earrings hanging from her ears. She was holding ChameleonÂ’s hand and was looking up at him with several emotions on her faceÂ…. She looked hurt, confused, and afraid.

6:25 a.m.; The Balkans

Snake toppled over, falling forever, hitting his head and limbs against rocks and trees. He hit bottom with his eyes closed tight, blocking out the pain. A chorus of laughter followed. He righted himself and opened his eyes to a sight he couldnÂ’t believe.
Four people stood before him. He knew each of them. He had seen each of them die. One was a giant of men, naked above the waist with a raven tattooed on his forehead; another a beautiful woman with blond hair he knew to be a Kurd; the next garbed in a coat and a gas mask, used to keep othersÂ’ thoughts out of his mind; the last, a ghastly looking man with an open coat, a thirst for blood, and a bullet hole in his forehead. Behind them laid a massive complex built into the mountainside.
Footsteps sounded behind Snake, but Snake didnÂ’t turn to look. He kept his eyes on the ghosts and waited for whatever was coming for him.
“Welcome to the Pantheon, Snake,” said the cold voice he had heard before. “This is my squad, the Council of Sion. I don’t believe introductions are necessary.”
Snake turned his head slowly and found himself face to face with a familiar metal mask, one with a large orange glowing ‘eye’ in the center. It was exactly how he remembered it, but now it had a large, blood-red “S” etched into the surface. The man that stood before him was no more than an exoskeleton; a mere memory of a man he had once called ‘friend’.

Chapter 3: Basic Training

By: 0Grey Fox0

November 24, 2014; 6:30 a.m.; Balkan Mountains

Snake stood hunched over, right arm gripping his left, wincing from the pain he felt in his entire body. He was covered in bruises, and he hadnÂ’t even been in a fight yet. His body wasnÂ’t all that hurt. His head was racing; tripping over itself trying to find some logical reasoning for what was before him. He didnÂ’t move. He knew he was no match for all five of them at once, especially in this condition. He didnÂ’t want to give them any reason to become hostile. However, his eyes followed the slim, metallic body of his former ally.
He grimaced. “Gray Fox…”
Fox laughed maniacally. “It’s good to know you remember me, Snake. I was worried for a moment that you had forgotten your old friends.”
Sniper Wolf walked up to Snake, her jacket unzipped as usual, flaunting her chest. She placed her hand on his chest and slid it up to his cheek as she had done before, many years ago. She lifted her hand and Snake winced. She started laughing. “He obviously remembers me…” She laid her fingers on the old scars she had left on Snake’s face and leaned in to whisper in his ear. “Until I kill you, you’re all I think about… Do you remember? It’s been almost ten years Snake. Can you imagine how long I’ve been waiting for this? How long I’ve been wanting to be this close to you?”
Snake refused to look at her. She didn’t exist. He had killed her. He had finished her off himself. He shook his head. “You aren’t real…”
There was another round of laughter. With a sudden silence, FoxÂ’s fist connected with SnakeÂ’s jaw, sending him reeling to the ground. He crawled to his knees and saw the red-stained snow where his head had laid. Cold skin and even colder metal brushed against the side of SnakeÂ’s face. Psycho Mantis had slid his face up against SnakeÂ’s, his mask removed. The stitches froze SnakeÂ’s skin.
A raspy, wheezing laugh issued from his wizened mouth. “Can you feel it, Snake? The pain? The fear? Oh, yes… You’re afraid… Why are you afraid, Snake? Is it because of us? The ghosts? The nightmare? I assure you… When you feel like this…” He slid his face against Snake’s slowly and smoothly, making Snake’s skin crawl. “… It’s real…”
Gray Fox coughed. “That’s enough…” He looked at Vamp. “Inform Pandora of Snake’s arrival. Otherwise, Sion, move out. Except for you, Raven. Stay here and toy with Snake a bit.”
With the command, Vamp deftly scaled the side of the facility and disappeared over the roof, Wolf slinked off into the snow, and Mantis donned his mask and ascended above the trees. Vulcan Raven grunted and nodded. Two on one, Snake thought. This gave him a better chance.
Fox turned toward the base. “I’ll be inside, Raven. Let me know when you’ve returned.”
Snake took the chance and pulled out his SOCOM. Fox whirled around and grabbed the pistol by the barrel. The gun fired sending nothing but snow flying into the air. Fox stepped back, elbowed Snake in the stomach, and broke the gun in half. He tossed the scraps aside, and shook a finger at Snake, who was now again hunched on the ground. “Basic training, Snake. No guns allowed.”
Fox then entered the facility through the front door, and it was just Snake and Vulcan Raven.

May 10, 2009; 9:46 p.m.; Atlantic Ocean; South of Newfoundland

Ocelot was in a cold sweat. He was afraid of Liquid, He couldnÂ’t control him, and he was surfacing more and more now. It was like two minds sharing the same body, and OcelotÂ’s head was splitting. Not only that, but he was tired. He had been working non-stop since the tanker. Two years of constant toil would break almost any man.
After Arsenal, he had quickly regained control of himself. He had made a stop to collect the child and continue on his way to the checkpoint. He was piloting the RAY late in the evening toward the checkpoint in Newfoundland. The child, still only two years old, was sitting next to him in the cockpit.
Suddenly, his right arm flinched. Ocelot winced. “Keep him under control, Adamska. Keep him under control,” he said to himself. The arm flailed out at the controls, grabbing on, and pulling whatever was within reach.
“This is my body!” Ocelot screamed.
The arm flung out and slammed the child against the wall. The loud wail of the baby filled the small compartment and the pain in OcelotÂ’s head was unbearable.
For a moment, Liquid was able to surface and yell, “Not anymore, it isn’t!”
The Metal Gear grinded onto dry land on the shore of Newfoundland, leaving the trees and landscape to bring it to a violent halt. The cockpit slid open and Ocelot slowly crawled out with one hand clutching his head. Once outside, he brought himself to his knees and slammed his head against the metal frame of the RAY. He pounded his skull into the steel for several minutes before he slipped into unconsciousness.
Ocelot awoke a few hours later. His head was bleeding, and the child was crying. He stood and looked around at the bleak, white countryside. “damn you, Liquid.”
He picked up the radio and called into headquarters. “This is Shalashaska. I’m gonna need a pick-up.”

6:36 a.m.; Balkan Mountains

The wind blew bitterly against SnakeÂ’s face. A storm was surely on its way. His eyes examined what he had left as a pile of bones and feathers many years ago. Snow hurtled through the air furiously, impeded by Vulcan RavenÂ’s massive body. If this wasnÂ’t real, it was one hell of a trick.
Suddenly, thunder boomed out across the field in the form of Raven’s unnaturally heavy voice. “Snake! It appears that fate deemed it necessary for us to meet again. This raven on my head thirsts for your blood, even now, when death separated us. It has led me here to fulfill its desire.” He laughed aloud, causing the ground to tremble with the sound. “Your soul is cursed, and the time will come for the blood you’ve spilled to be avenged. That time is near.”
Snake stood defenseless, without any sort of weapon. He was struggling with himself. On one side, he couldnÂ’t believe what was happening. If he did, that would mean he was insane. However, if he didnÂ’t stand prepared to defend himself, he could be killed if it was all real. It was all crazy.
When Snake looked up from his thoughts, he was looking up at Raven, only feet from him. Raven chuckled. “I am sure you recall me telling you about the Ear Pull. This competition will be in the same spirit. One man’s inner strength against another’s. One will fall; the other will walk away with his life. Are you ready to begin, Snake?”
Snake took the opportunity to start the fight. It didnÂ’t matter whether it was real or not. His soldierÂ’s instinct told him to fight. He drove two fists into RavenÂ’s chest, using the momentum of his second punch to bring his leg up to RavenÂ’s head.
Snake froze, frightened. Vulcan Raven had not been budged. Raven leaned his head back and laughed, long and loud. He then wrapped a whole hand around SnakeÂ’s calf and hurled him into a nearby tree. Snake slumped down to the bottom of the tree, wincing and groaning.
“I’m going to crack your skull open, Solid Snake.” Raven strode over to Snake, his feet leaving deep impressions in the snow.
Snake stood slowly and shook himself. He couldnÂ’t give up that fast. Snake lunged at Raven and drove his knee into the giantÂ’s stomach, causing him to bend forward. He then brought his elbow down on the back of Vulcan RavenÂ’s neck.
It had no effect. The shaman turned and grabbed Snake by the head, plowing SnakeÂ’s body into the snow and his fist into SnakeÂ’s stomach. Snake coughed up blood and gasped for air. The snow in the air started to drive faster, causing SnakeÂ’s skin to freeze.
Raven pulled Snake up by the sneaking suit and tossed him backwards, letting him land on his feet. “I expected you to be a better opponent than this, Snake. Stand and face me. We aren’t near finished yet.”
Snake shivered. Is this how it would all end? In the driving snow, outside some God-forsaken frozen fortress? Being pummeled to no end? Wait a minute. Snake smiled weakly. That gave him an idea. Snake gave a rattling chuckle. “You sound a little confident for someone who waits to be attacked. Haven’t you got a little fight in you?”
Raven growled and dashed at Snake as fast as someone his size could. Oversized fists beat on SnakeÂ’s body repeatedly, but Snake was ready for it. He raised his own arms to deflect the blows to the side.
The attacks continued to fall, and Snake grew more and more tired, but his strategy was beginning to take effect. Raven was growing agitated and was breathing heavier. The attacks ceased momentarily.
Snake smirked. “What’s wrong? I figured someone your size would have a little more than that in him.”
Raven yelled and ripped half of a limb off the tree he had thrown Snake against. “The mark of death is upon you, Solid Snake! You will die here!” He swung his make-shift club at Snake again and again, Snake dodging and ducking with every strike. Every assault came slower than the last.
Finally, Raven attempted to bring the club down on SnakeÂ’s skull. Snake rolled to the side putting Vulcan Raven between him and the tree. The club showered the both of them with fresh snow, as the wind blew harder and harder.
Vulcan Raven had grown tired. In his eagerness to attack Snake, he sacrificed both energy and position.
Snake ran, leapt into the air and planted both feet on RavenÂ’s chest as the behemoth turned to face him again. Vulcan Raven stumbled backward, and the remaining half of the limb on the tree impaled him through the chest.
Snake stood, triumphant and looked at his defeated foe. Raven grimaced and spat blood. He was hemorrhaging freely from the wound in his chest. He looked up at Snake with fire in his eyes. “And you doom another soul, Solid Snake… Before, I knew you to be a devil on the battlefield, but now I realize… To call you such would be too kind… You are something worse. Some unnamed embodiment of bloodlust.”
Snake shook his head. What was this? What did Raven mean?
“The souls you have taken will haunt you forever. You have seen it already. I warn you, Snake. The more blood you spill, the more you ensure your own end.” He chuckled a bit, causing the blood to flow heavier from the wound, forced out by the pressure of his lungs. He was silent for a moment. Snake thought he had passed for a moment. He then lifted his head up and looked around. “I die alone this time. The ravens won’t come near this forsaken place…. But, no worry… I’m sure I will see you again soon. The man in black…” He inhaled his last breath. “…he will not let me rest.”
His head then lolled to one side. SnakeÂ’s attention was drawn to RavenÂ’s eyes. They had faded to a pale gray. He recognized the color from somewhere before. He frowned.
Solid Snake turned from the reddened snow and approached the enormous steel doors. When he neared, the doors slid open slightly, just enough to walk through. Snake turned just in time to see a bright light in the darkness of the trees before all went dark. Snake ignored it. All of this was so confusing. In a dream-like state, Snake entered the Pantheon, unarmed.
