Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater Story
Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater Storyline
PART ONE
Game: Metal Gear Solid 3
Year: 1964
The Virtuous Mission
On
August 24, "Jack" an operative of the newly formed American covert unit
"FOX" is aboard an AC-130H Spectre, flying over Tselinoyarsk Russia.
The FOX unit commander, Major Zero (assuming the codename Major Tom),
briefs Jack on the impending mission: He is to enter a secret Russian
research facility and retrieve an asylum-seeking scientist, Nikolai
Stephanovich Sokolov, who was returned to the Soviet Union as part of a
secret bargain to resolve the Cuban Missile Crisis. Jack (now
code-named Naked Snake) executes the world's first HALO jump into enemy
territory.
After landing, Snake proceeds to the research
facility, OKB-754, to extract Sokolov. As Snake and Sokolov make their
way to their extraction point, they are ambushed by KGB operatives and
held at gunpoint. As luck would have it, The KGB agents are ambushed by
the Ocelot Unit (a rogue GRU unit that supports the Brezhnev faction's
intent to capture Sokolov) and are subsequently killed. Snake manages
to immobilize all of the Ocelot Unit members while Sokolov escapes.
Snake
proceeds to Sokolov's position, after which they spot what appears to
be a tank on a nearby mountain. Sokolov positively identifies this tank
as the Shagohod or "Treading Behemoth" undergoing "Phase 1" testing.
The pair begin to cross a rope bridge to the extraction point when they
encounter The Boss. The Boss is a legendary American soldier; the
founder and leader of the Cobra unit, and Snakes mentor. Snake is
surprised by this meeting; as he has been told that The Boss is serving
on a Permit class submarine in the Arctic Ocean.
The Boss
reveals to Snake that she has decided to defect to the Soviet Union.
After this surprising revelation, Sokolov is captured by the Cobra
unit. Colonel Volgin (prominent figure within the soviet army's
extremist faction) makes his entrance, further explaining the boss'
intent to defect, with the proclamation: "welcome to my country, and to
my unit." The boss then gives Volgin two miniature recoil-less nuclear
warheads, known as "Davy Crockets". So that Volgin's plan to overthrow
Khrushchev isn't be revealed, he requests that The Boss kill Snake. She
then proceeds to disarm him, and throws him over the bridge into the
river far below. Snake, left for dead, drags himself out of the river
and tends to his injuries whilst waiting for extraction via the FOX
unit recovery balloon.
Volgin, Ocelot and the Cobra Unit make
their escape in several Hind-A helicopters, with the Shagohod in tow.
From his helicopter, Volgin fires one of the Davy Crockets, despite
Ocelot's blatant protests, triggering a nuclear explosion which
destroys Sokolov's research facility.
Operation: Snake Eater
Soviet
radar had detected the AC-130H Spectre as it rescued Snake, thus
wrongly implying direct American involvement in the nuclear attack.
President Johnson informs Khrushchev of The Boss' defection, and the
plan to topple his rule; that it was her new faction who was
responsible for the destruction of the research facility. On August 30,
nearly one week after the failure of the Virtuous Mission, Snake is
once deployed into Tselinoyarsk by a D-21 drone launched from an M-21
(a modified A-12 Oxcart).
Snake's first objective is to meet
with ADAM, one of two former NSA code breakers who had defected to the
Soviet Union in September 1960. Along the way, The Boss confronts Snake
and gives him a final chance to forfeit the mission and return home.
Snake ignores her and subsequently The Boss disarms him, disassembling
his M1911A1 pistol, and disappears. When Snake finally gets to the
ruins of OKB-754, he meets EVA rather than ADAM. EVA reveals to him she
is the other defector and that ADAM was unable to come to the meeting.
She gives Snake a new pistol, as well as a scientist uniform that will
help him infiltrate Volgin's bases.
After a second seemingly
brief tutorial based encounter with Ocelot, Snake heads to Graniny
Gorki; a research laboratory under Volgin's control. According to EVA,
Sokolov is being held there in order to initiate and oversee the final
phases of the Shagohod's completion. Once inside the facility Snake
finds the head of the OKB-812 Granin Design Bureau, Aleksandr
Leonovitch Granin. Granin is driven to drink by his despise of
Sokolov's fame and access to research funds. In their conversation,
Granin gives Snake a key that opens a door which leads to the
mountains, where he will be able to access a hidden tunnel into
Volgin's fortress, Groznyj Grad, where Sokolov is located.
Snake
successfully infiltrates Groznyj Grad and locates Sokolov in the West
Wing. While meeting, they are caught by Volgin. Both are taken prisoner
and tortured, resulting in the unfortunate death of Sokolov and the
loss of Snake's right eye. During a break in the torture, Snake escapes
Groznyj Grad via the sewer system. Snake meets up with EVA, who returns
the equipment Snake lost when he was captured. He then prepares to
return to Groznyj Grad, to destroy the Shagohod and stop Volgin's
take-over plot.
Snake once again infiltrates the fortress and
succeeds in planting enough C3 explosive to bring the complex to the
ground. However, the explosion fails to destroy the Shagohod, forcing
Snake and EVA to flee on a motorcycle. Volgin chases them in the
Shagohod, which proves to be his undoing. Using an RPG-7, Snake
disables the Shagohod and, when Volgin emerges from the tank, is struck
by lightning and killed. Snake and EVA prepare to make their escape to
Alaska, but Snake is confronted by The Boss. She reveals that her
defection was an elaborate ploy, designed to appropriate The
Philosophers' Legacy; the wealth of the most powerful nations of their
time (United States, the Soviet Union and China), from Volgin and
return it to the United States. She tells Snake that he must complete
his mission; he must kill her and take the Legacy back with him. She
and Snake will have one final battle, whoever wins will inherit the
title of "Boss". They duel and Snake ultimately prevails. He returns to
the United States and is granted the Distinguished Service Cross and
the title of "Big Boss" by President Johnson. Snake then visits the
anonymous grave of The Boss, a patriot who will forever be reviled by
the country she so fought to protect.
