Metal Gear 1 Story

Game: Metal Gear 1

Year: 1995

Deep in South Africa, 200 Kilometres north of Garzburg. Outer Heaven - an armed fortress nation established by a legendary mercenary. He was feared in combat by both his friends and foes as a hero and a lunatic.

The United States of America have found out that a weapon of mass destruction capable of re-writing world history is under development within the Outer Heaven complex. They have called upon high-tech Special Forces unit Fox-Hound to take care of the situation. In response to this order, Big Boss (Commander-in-chief of Fox-Hound) sent Gray Fox, the only man in the history of the unit to have been awarded the title of "Fox" and undoubtedly the most esteemed and valued member.

After a few days, Gray Fox was missing in action, his last message being "Metal Gear¦" Taking the situation seriously, the joint chiefs again called for Fox-Hound. Big Boss selected rookie soldier Solid Snake (who had just recently joined the unit) as the agent, and entrusted everything unto him.

Successfully making a solo infiltration into Outer Heaven, Snake managed to contact local resistance members Schneider, Diane, and Jennifer, and it was with their co-operation that he succeeded in rescuing Gray Fox. Gray Fox subsequently relayed the terrifying facts about Metal Gear to Snake. Metal Gear was the development name of a nuclear-equipped bipedal tank. It can cross any land terrain of strategic value that would impede normal tanks. It can conduct local warfare unassisted with unique weapons such as its Vulcan cannon, and anti tank missiles. Most shockingly of all, it could also conduct global warfare by carrying out a nuclear attack against any target on the face of the earth.

With Metal Gear, Outer Heaven was trying to establish its military superiority over the entire world. In order to stop this threat, Snake would have to destroy Metal Gear. He proceeded to rescue the Metal Gear chief engineer, Dr. Pettrovich, and after doing so, learnt how to destroy Metal Gear itself. However, as Snake approached the heart of the Outer Heaven complex, well designed traps are set all around Snake - as if his actions are being leaked to the enemy.

In the midst of the escalating battle, the leader of the resistance, Schneider, fell into the hands of the enemy, and Snake himself was injured through the near-fatal battles with Outer Heaven's highest ranking mercenaries. Through what seemed to be an eternity of fighting, Snake's indomitable sprit led him to the 100th floor basement of the complex where Metal Gear was under development. Whilst evading the extremely formidable defence system, Snake ultimately succeeded in destroying the fortunately inactive Metal Gear.

Snake was proceeding to escape from Outer Heaven upon completing the mission, but during the escape he was confronted by one man - Fox-Hound commander-in-chief - Big Boss. Big Boss laughed weakly at the astounded Snake and told him of the truth regarding his mission. Whilst serving as the commander-in-chief of Fox-Hound, Big Boss also ran a mercenary dispatch company (Outer Heaven Inc) utilizing his connections and capital from his years as a merc. He had planned to build this company a larger military establishment, and he built Outer Heaven as its base. His purpose for sending the relatively green Snake to Outer Heaven was to cause informational confusion against the American military leaders.

It was needless to say that Big Boss had made a grave miscalculation. He would never have conceived that Snake would make it this far. Having lost Metal Gear, Big Boss activated the self destruction system of the underground base. Whilst the countdown to destruction continued, his scream echoed in the emptiness. "You have gone too far, Snake. Too far!"
On the 100th floor basement, the battle between two men commenced - free of ideology and politics.

The armed fortress nation, Outer Heaven, collapsed. The impenetrable fortress comprised of the best military technology, and occupied by the toughest mercenaries burned in flames. Behind him, the flames reached skyward, as Outer Heaven fell, leaving Solid Snake truly alone.
