Key Events
This section is a brief overview in chronological order of the key events in the Metal Gear timeline.

(1964) Tselinoyarsk
The Fox Unit send CIA operative Naked Snake to infiltrate the Soviet Union at Tselinoyarsk on a high profile rescue mission to save a scientist by the name of the name of Nikolai Stephanovich Sokolov. Sokolov is being forced by the soviets to complete a revolutionary type of nuclear weapon; the Shagohod. What starts out to be a simple rescue mission becomes much more when Snake's former mentor, "The Boss" defects to an anti Khrushchev Soviet military faction, stealing Sokolov in the process.

(1971) Founding of FOXHOUND.
Naked Snake (now known as Big Boss) follows the traditions of Major Zero and forms the High-Tech Special Forces unit Foxhound.

(1972) The "Les Enfants Terribles'' project.
The world's greatest soldier, Big Boss, is retrieved from the battlefield in a coma. The American government examine his genomic information with the intent of learning more about the "soldier gene."
The result of the experiment are three cloned "sons of Big Boss" that are to succeed Big Boss after his death. Not all details are known as to the early lives of the 3 children, but it is known that Solidus was believed to have been raised somewhere in Asia, Solid Snake in America, and Liquid in Great Britain. All of the Snakes have made extensive achievements within some of the worlds most renowned military organisations.

(1995) Outer Heaven
Foxhound's best agent, Gray Fox, disappears during his latest mission, and Solid Snake (the newest addition to the unit) is sent in to rescue him, and also uncover the most recent plans for a bipedal battle tank known as "Metal Gear".

(1999) Zanzibar
Solid Snake is sent to infiltrate Zanzibar Land to rescue Dr. Pettrovich, and retrieve plans for a revolutionary new fuel system called OILIX. In this mission he engages Gray Fox in a hand to hand battle in a mine field. Solid Snake is yet again confronted by Big Boss himself.

(2005) Shadow Moses
Solid Snake is called out of retirement by his former commander (Colonel Roy Campbell) and asked to fight against his former unit, Foxhound. Foxhound and the Next Generation Special Forces staged what they claimed to be a revolution, and took over the nuclear weapons disposal facility on Shadow Moses Island, Alaska. They are demanding that the remains of Big Boss be turned over to them in addition to $1 billion. This mission ends up being more than Snake bargained for, when he finds out the truth about his origin and the real reason he is there.

(2007) Tanker USS Discovery
After Snake and Otacon formed Philanthropy (a non government anti-metal gear organisation) they receive an anonymous tip (actually from Revolver Ocelot) leading them to the Hudson River, where a tanker full of marines is transporting a prototype anti Metal Gear model named Metal Gear Ray. Snake infiltrates the tanker to find proof of the existence of a new Metal Gear, and prove the U.S. involvement.

(2009) The Big Shell / S3 Simulation
Two years after the Tanker incident, a new Foxhound member codenamed Raiden is sent in to a cleanup facility that has been erected in the same location as the sunken tanker, in order to keep all of the toxins contained without risk. During a tour of the Big Shell plant, a rogue military unit known as Dead Cell take over the facility with the aid of a Russian private army. The terrorists are opting to take over the newest Metal Gear unit known as Arsenal Gear. What seems to be a normal mission ends up being much more, as Raiden uncovers the truth of Arsenal, and his mission.
